Finnish band Consciousness Removal Project follow in the footsteps in the Post-Metal scene behind such greats as Neurosis, Cult of Luna and Isis. Starting as a solo Ambient act a few years back, the 'Project' grew to a four piece cast of devoted musicians willing and ready to step into the stoplight to claim their glory. 'Do You Ever Think It's the End of the World?' uses quite a lot of different sounds to get it's point across. While this can put a beating on the listeners ears to discern these genres and full understand the overall effect, they do it so subtle and with good skill that this never becomes an issue. The previous experience with Ambient music gives its softer post-rock build up sections more power, clarity and direction. It's Advant-garde styling are clearly present using several classical instruments to give more depth.

This album is dripping with eerie mystery, from the distant females vocals on behemoth of a track 'The Ship', the barley discernible screams and growls, and the beautifully sweeping cover convey shear sorrow, gloom and impending doom. Some songs seem to mimic the style and song writing very closely to that of The Ocean on 'Precambrian', and the atmosphere is creates on it's second half (again with the classical and ambient styling.) Others take on a very slow and plodding heavy riff based sound that gives off a tremendous doom metal oriented vibe. One great thing about this release is that is doesn't sacrifice either atmosphere or sincere heaviness to be predominate in one aspect. Both are highly present and balanced throughout the album. The Post-Rock sections are magnificently done and are extremely calm and relaxing, but its a false lure as after each instrumental, it picks right up into pure power again.

Although few in numbers, the weaknesses of this album for my own taste, is more than anything the male growls. They seem very dry and unpolished. The overall effect usage is great, making them blend within the atmosphere of the music itself, but as a stand still item not so much. The cleans are good however. The other main thing is its a bit too Doomy for its own good at times. Its easy to mistake heavy sludge riffing for Doom, as the genres are fairly similar in approach. However as times its a bit too boring and flat, even for atmospheric sludge. Overall this is a really great sounding atmospheric Sludge Release, that fans of bands I had mentioned above should surly check out, even if just for the third track alone.

You can DL the album for free on their Bandcamp, or on this site below.

Highly Recommended!!!
